Throwback Tuesday - Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO THROWBACK TUESDAY...BECAUSE WE BELIEVE EVERY DEVOTION IS WORTH A SECOND CHANCE.

Church-The Reason

Every window conjured up nightmares. Every room was a breeding ground for ghouls and goblins. Not your normal description for a church but very accurate for the one I was affiliated with.

It was high school, and I had landed a cleaning job at the church my dad was pastoring. The pay was decent, the location convenient and the hours flexible. All enticing factors for a high school student. But on the weekends, partying came first.

By the time I arrived to clean on Saturday nights I was tired, it was late and I was scared. Churches may bustle with activities on Sunday but at night they are frightening places-especially for a teenager with an active imagination. Sometimes I would take a friend to drive away the woolies. Most of the time, I just endured the chill bumps. Read more...

Why Is It So Difficult to Live the Christian Life? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. Romans 7:15 NLT

Effort normally leads to success, but the battles along the way may be intense.

I suppose I never understood why I chafed any time someone told me I was wrong, that I should do something a different way, or that the quality of my work was unsatisfactory. Somewhere along my educational journey, I discovered the term Type A personality. Then I understood. I was one, and one characteristic was distaste for criticism and correction. Type A’s thrive on perfection…doing their best. When their best is called into question, they cringe. I was among the cringers. Age has tempered this trait in me, but occasionally I still find myself bristling when I’m criticized…even if it’s constructive.

Type A’s know they’re not perfect—and can’t ever attain perfection, but often continue to live as if it’s possible. This leads to frustration. Paul felt the same in the spiritual realm.

Like everyone else, I was born with a sinful nature. When I trusted Christ to forgive my sins, he allotted me a new nature. Some believe we hang onto the old nature as well as the new. Others claim the old nature is eradicated, leaving only the new nature and the flesh (learned ways of thinking and acting that clash with how God wants us to think and act). Either way, a battle ensued after I became a believer—a battle that I’ll fight until death.

The intensity of the battle reflects my daily need to depend on God’s indwelling Spirit to enable me to live the Christian life. I can’t do it on my own, and anytime I try I’ll fail.

Understanding the battle is half the battle of winning the war. My individual war reflects the spiritual battle between good and evil that is constantly stirring on a grander scale. The good news is the battle is winnable in Christ. All I must do is trust.

When the battle is intense, trust in God’s power to deliver victory.

Prayer: Though our spiritual battles are many and often intense, we trust You, Almighty God, for victory.

Will We Know People in Heaven? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. Luke 16:23 NLT

Good-bye’s are difficult; heaven is for hello’s.

One of the beautiful assets of eyesight is recognition. I’ve lived in numerous locations and had the privilege of knowing hundreds of people. Some of the names I’ve forgotten, but when I see a particular person I’ve known I recognize their face. The thought of not knowing people in heaven that I’ve known on earth is troubling— particularly if it’s a family member. To be incapable of recognizing my parents, grandparents, children, or spouse would be disturbing.

Unfortunately, there’s no Bible verse that states, “You will recognize people in heaven that you’ve known on earth.” Yet there are stories that infer we will. Jesus told a story about a rich man and a beggar. During his lifetime, the rich man had everything he wanted. The beggar subsisted on the bread crumbs the rich man discarded after using them to wipe his face. As their states in life were different, so were their places after death. Even though the rich man was in hell, he recognized Abraham of old—whom he had never met, as well as the beggar he had ignored.

During Saul’s reign as Israel’s king, he re-instated the divine law outlawing mediums or fortune tellers. But when things weren’t going well in the kingdom, he disguised himself and consulted a witch who resided at Endor. When she conjured up the prophet Samuel, Saul immediately recognized the prophet who had earlier anointed him as king (I Samuel 28:7-20).

Jesus once took Peter, James, and John—three of his closest disciples, to a high mountain where his true identity was revealed. The old prophets Moses and Elijah appeared with him. Based on Peter’s request to build shelters for all three, it’s evident he recognized people he’d never seen.

Though we can’t be certain—and in heaven it likely won’t matter, it appears we’ll know those we’ve known on earth and possibly those we’ve read about in history—especially biblical history. Most importantly, however, we’ll know the One who died for our sins.

Prayer: Everliving God, thank You for the promise of a day when we will see and know You face to face even as You know us now.

Flashback Friday - Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO FLASHBACK FRIDAY...BECAUSE EVERY DEVOTION DESERVES A SECOND READING.

Trusting God with the Future

I knew she was there; I simply couldn't see her.

My daughter and I enjoyed several years of hiking when she was a preteen. She was young and fast. I was approaching 40 and slow. She normally led but remained close-except when my middle brother and son joined us. My brother was fast like my daughter but my son was slow like me. They enjoyed outwalking us. We knew they were ahead but couldn't see them until they stopped for us to catch up. It was always comforting when we did. Read more...

Why Did God Make Us Weak? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years…He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna…to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Deuteronomy 8:2-3 NLT

In spite of our best efforts to be strong, our weaknesses frequently raise their ugly heads.

On a recent vacation in the Tennessee mountains, my wife and I and another couple encountered someone who succumbed to one such weakness. As my friend waited in a crowded line to pay for gas, he witnessed an older man ranting and raving at one of the cashiers. He belittled her with curses because she wasn’t waiting on customers quickly enough. Even though every Southern gentleman present gave him “the stare,” he continued his tirade.

Though I’ve never demonstrated my weaknesses in such a public manner, I have them nevertheless. On numerous occasions, I’ve lost my temper for stupid reasons. I’ve flown off the handle at my children, wife, or co-workers. I’ve turned to addictions in times of grief and depression rather than to God. I’ve secretly exuded jealousy towards those who work less than I do but have much more of this world’s goods. My list of weaknesses is lengthy—and many of them could be considered sin. Why does God put me in seemingly no-win situations?

God humbled the Israelites on their way to the Promised Land.He also allowed the apostle Paul to have a thorn in the flesh and refused to remove it despite his pleadings.

If I could handle life on my own, I wouldn’t need God. My weaknesses demonstrate to me and others that I require him to get through and make it successfully. When I prop up on my own power, I’ll make a mess every time. My failures remind me that only by depending on God’s indwelling Spirit can I make the correct choices and garner the strength required to face life’s dilemmas. When others see how God carries me through unbearable situations—and even the smaller daily battles, he receives the credit. The spotlight shines on him. And so it should.

God created humans with a need for his divine presence. Our weaknesses remind us we need him. Are you trying to live life in your own strength?

Prayer: Almighty God, grant us the power to let go of our perceived strengths so we can maneuver life in Your power.

When Do We Go to Heaven? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. II Corinthians 5:8 KJV

Two recent books have made the subject of heaven popular. 90 Minutes in Heaven recounts the story of Don Piper, a Baptist minister, driving home from a conference when his vehicle collides with a semi-truck. Piper is pronounced dead at the scene but for the next 90 minutes inhabits heaven. Back on earth, a fellow conference attendee is passing the lethal scene. Even though Piper is dead, the minister prays for him. Piper miraculously comes back to life.

Heaven is for Real exposes the story of Todd Burpo’s son who nearly died during an emergency surgery. Burpo was pastoring a church in Nebraska when the incident materialized. Shortly after surgery, their son Colton began revealing events impossible for him to have known. He claimed he met Jesus and his great-grandfather who died 30 years before his birth. Most telling was his account of meeting his miscarried sister whom he was never told about.

An earlier biblical account appears to answer the question as well. One of the thieves crucified beside Jesus asked to be remembered when Jesus came into his kingdom. Jesus replied, Today, you shall be with me in Paradise. Apparently, the apostle Paul—battered and bruised from repeated persecutions, believed the same thing.

Two basic answers have been proposed throughout Christian history. We enter heaven immediately upon our death, or our souls sleep until the second coming of Christ and the accompanying resurrection. Most have chosen to believe what the Bible appears to overwhelmingly propose: our souls (spirits) penetrate heaven immediately after we take our final breath. Our re-made bodies are later re-united with our spirits at the Resurrection.

But when I go to heaven is not as important as knowing I’m going. My residence there is assured when I accept Christ’s payment for my sin and commit my life to serving him. Have you made your reservations?

Prayer: Almighty God, thank You for the eternal reservations You make available to all who trust in Your Son for salvation.

Throwback Tuesday - Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO THROWBACK TUESDAY...BECAUSE WE BELIEVE EVERY DEVOTION DESERVES A SECOND READING.

Empty And Betrayed

She was empty, betrayed and thirsty. Usually three strikes and you’re out. She had five.

Jesus met her in a region respectable people avoided. But then again, he wasn’t into traditions. Tired from walking, he stops at a well for rest and a drink of water. She comes at noon, probably because of her reputation. It’s not the normal time for drawing water, but it’s a good time if you want to avoid the gossiping, whispering, proper ladies.

Disregarding protocol, Jesus speaks to her and asks for a drink. The woman is just as surprised as the disciples are to see him doing it when they return. She’s also horrified that he knows her reputation. But it didn’t matter. He was concerned about her future, not her past. Read more...

How Can God Hear Everyone Praying at the Same Time? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

The LORD is close to all who call on him, yes, to all who call on him in truth. Psalm 145:18 NLT

The end of the school year was nearing, and we were about to celebrate our annual yearbook signing. The entire middle and high school gathered in the gym for the festivities. Separated by grade, they sat on the floor in their respective circles awaiting the announcement of their grade level. When each grade was named, a rousing roar ascended. Then one by one they strolled to a table to receive their long awaited prize. For the next hour, students milled over the gym floor seeking signatures from friends and faculty. The hum of hundreds of voices played tricks on my ears. Rarely could I distinguish even a single voice.

God claims he hears all who pray to him. At any given moment, that may be thousands…even millions of people. To explain God’s ability to hear everyone in the same time frame requires an understanding of time from God’s perspective. Human time is chronos…sequential. It ticks away as one moment follows another. I can hear someone in a particular moment but need another moment for the next person. If two people speak to me at the same time, only bits and pieces of what they say will sneak through.

God’s time is kairos. A time lapse…an indeterminate amount of time in which all things happen. While I operate only in chronos time, God maneuvers in both. He enters time with me, but he also penetrates his time. When he does, he hears all who are praying to him in any given instant.

Since chronos time is all I know, I don’t pretend to understand God’s time. No one can. But by faith, I believe he hears me when I pray even if millions more are praying simultaneously. In fact, I know he does because my prayers are answered. Answered prayer gives evidence that God hears his people when they pray…every last one of them.

Prayer: Thank You, loving Lord, for hearing and answering our prayers.

Am I On The Right Track? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

Look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. Exodus 31:2-3 NLT

When life collapses, it’s tempting to question whether we’re on the right track.

Newlyweds normally enjoy the candid shots photographers capture while no one is looking. But Dan and Jackie Anderson doubtlessly weren’t expecting the one their photographer snared at their wedding in Crosslake, Minnesota. Prior to the ceremony, the entire wedding party gathered on a weather-beaten dock to pose for pictures. Suddenly, life collapsed…in the form of the dock, sending many of the participants plunging into the water below. The spirits of the wedding party, however, weren’t dampened by the dive. In fact, the bride looked at the photographer with a smile and said, “Did you record that? Please tell me you got that on camera!”

Life can throw some nasty curves. When it does, it’s tempting to ask, “Am I on the right track?” Bezalel was.  He and another skilled craftsman were chosen by God to construct Israel’s Tabernacle and all its implements.

Track is usually defined as the direction I’m taking in life—which quite normally involves my career. Several questions can help me answer the question. Does my employer require me to do things that violate God’s commands? If so, my career path may be correct but not my current employer. Is my career path allowing me to use the skills and natural talents God has given me? God grants natural abilities and gifts of the Spirit to his children. What I do in life should employ them. If I maintain this current track, will I be able to look back with contentment when I retire? When I use my gifts and talents, I’ll enjoy doing what I’m doing. If I’m miserable, it may be a telltale sign I need a change.

Make sure you don’t miss the track God has designed for you to travel.

Prayer: Thank You, Father, for creating us with purpose. Enable us to discover that purpose so we can enjoy the life You’ve given us.

Flashback Friday - Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO FLASHBACK FRIDAY...ENJOY THIS DEVOTION FOR A SECOND TIME.

Running On The Rim by Martin Wiles

Ker plump, ker plump. The noise grew louder, but I wasn’t about to stop.

Being a teenager, running a paper route and going to school are not easy things to do at the same time, but I was making a valid attempt. My route took me five miles from home and began around 3 a.m.

One night, I heard a mysterious ker plump. I was in the middle of nowheresville and didn’t want to investigate, but since the car was riding lopsided I figured I should. A flat tire. I wasn’t about to change it in the dark, so I drove it home almost ruining the rim in the process. Read more...

How Can I Know Christianity Is the Only True Religion? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. John 14:6 NLT

Why can’t choosing a religion be like many other things in life? Many options…none wrong…some with just better benefits?

As a teacher, I’ve noticed most students tend to score higher on multiple choice tests than they do on short answer or fill in the blank. Recognizing answers is easier than producing them completely on my own. Multiple choice tests also allow one to use the process of elimination. One answer is clearly wrong and normally easy to eliminate. If I can find one small error in two of the other answers, then I can select the correct choice.

Though many believe any religion will suffice, Jesus begs to differ. When he informed the disciples he would soon leave them for heaven, Thomas piped in that neither he nor the others knew the way. Jesus cautioned him that he did.

According to the “World Christian Encyclopedia: A comparative survey of churches and religions – AD 30 to 2200,” there are 19 major world religions that are further divided into 270 large religious groups. Christians, Hindus, and Muslims comprise the groups with the largest number of adherents.

The fact that some of the major world religions have similar stories and teachings makes choosing more difficult. Like so many other things that concern religion—regardless of which one is chosen, faith is the crucial matter. No scientific proof…only overwhelming evidence, can be offered. What separates Christianity from other religions is that it teaches One loving God who allows people access to him through unconditional love and grace rather than works. When works are involved, I can never be sure I’ve done enough. With Christ, he simply loves me as I am and tells me to come to him. Based on what he’s done on Calvary’s cross—and nothing I’ve done, God the Father accepts me into his family.

Are you traveling the right road to God?

Prayer: Thank You, merciful Father, for Your unconditional grace and mercy that makes it possible for us to come to You.

Is God Real? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” John 20:25 NLT

Some things I’m challenged to believe even when they fail every apparent test.

I have certain tests I use to determine validity. Quite naturally, they involve my senses. How do I know my wife is real? This may seem like an absurd question, but the tests I employ to test her reality are the same ones I use for more complicated issues. I see a body lying beside mine every morning, and I know I’ve seen this person before. I smell her odors…but in a pleasant way. With my ears, I hear her speak to me and others, and I recognize the voice. I can touch her. She feels like the same person I’ve touched for the last ten years. Touch lets me know she’s not an apparition. And if I’m really bold, I can nibble on her neck. When I’ve employed all these tests, I conclude, “She is real.”

Doubting Thomas—as he is unfortunately known, had trouble conceiving Jesus was the Messiah..much less that he had risen from the grave. The reports troubled him.

When determining God’s reality, I can’t employ the standard tests I use with everything else. I can’t see, touch, hear, smell, or taste him. But other tests are available. I can glare at circumstances over the course of my lifetime and that of others. Circumstances that couldn’t have materialized the way they did without intervention from a higher power. I can hear someone speaking to my inner spirit even though I never hear an audible voice. I can observe changes in people…changes that can’t be explained by a simple decision to turn over a new leaf.

Yet in the end, the only way I can convince myself God is real is by a leap of faith. There’s no concrete proof…only overwhelming evidence. And everyone must decide whether that evidence is sufficient for them. Is it for you?

Prayer: God of all creation, make Your presence real to us that we might follow You faithfully.

Throwback Tuesday - Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO THROWBACK TUESDAY...ENJOY THIS DEVOTION ONE MORE TIME.

Simply Loved by Martin Wiles

“I love you if…” “I love you because…” “But if you don’t…I won’t.”

Most wedding vows incorporate a promise to love in sickness and health, in sorrow and gladness, through good times and bad times and without reservation. Marriage vows portray the model; reality reveals, well, reality.

I’ll love you if you wash my clothes, have my children, cook my meals, clean the yard, clean the house, make the bed, buy me clothes, pay for my hair cuts, manicures and pedicures, pay the bills… Or I love you because you have a dynamite body, have a six figure job, have beautiful eyes, have a good life insurance policy, have a house, land, cows and hogs… Read more...

Why Do Tragedies Happen? - Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

And what about the eighteen people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? Luke 13:4 NLT

Every morning while eating breakfast, I sit before the television and hear story after story of tragedies. A fire rips through an apartment complex. Twin tornadoes tear through a Midwestern state leaving destruction and death in their path. A young man is accused of rape and murder. Gangs have taken over a certain area of a city. Militant groups are attempting to overthrow a legitimate government. Twins are born conjoined, and the doctors give little hope.

In Jesus’ time and before, it was typical to associate tragedy with sin. Pilate had killed innocent worshipers offering sacrifices. Now a tower had fallen.

Sin is the overall answer to the question about tragedies. Material things deteriorate due to the impact of sin (Romans 8:22). Bad things can happen to people who are generally good when they make sinful choices. Sin has consequences. In a lapse of judgment, I may choose to drive drunk and kill someone in an accident. While God could prevent the accident, he often allows sin to take its devastating course even when innocent people are affected.

When certain natural forces collide, disasters occur: earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, tsunamis. Innocent people always die when they strike. Though God could prevent the deaths—and the formation of the disaster itself, he chooses to let nature’s laws take their course.

Tragedies are tragic, but out of them new life emerges. People’s better angels arise to rebuild what natural disasters have stolen. Families pull together when personal tragedies strike. Lessons are learned from the consequences of sinful choices. When all is said and done, I can’t explain the why of every tragedy. Many seem senseless. What I can do is trust that God knows what he’s doing and that everything he does is carried out with the greatest love I could ever experience.

Let God teach you to trust him when tragedy strikes.

Prayer: When tragedies—personal or otherwise, strike, dear God, we choose to trust Your goodness and wisdom.

Sin List - Martin Wiles

We called him the “grocery list” professor. And with good reason.

He was my most lenient college professor but also the one whose tests were terribly difficult. The reason? Lists. Pop tests were passed only by studying every list I encountered while completing homework. A’s on tests required extensive preparation. On test day, I could only hope my short term memory survived because that’s as far as any information ever made it.

The author of the psalm was glad the Lord didn’t like lists, and I am too. If God kept a list of my sins, I’d buy stock in paper. And if he held the list against me, I’d be doomed. If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? (Psalm 130:3)

Fortunately God doesn’t keep a record. At least not for those who ask forgiveness. Unfortunately, I can’t always say the same. If I’m not careful, I’ll hold on to hurts others have inflicted on me and formulate a plan on how I can exact even more pain on them.

Instead of storing wrongs in my short term memory, I tend to rehearse them which shoves them into my long term memory. Once there, they are permanently ingrained. I may not consciously ruminate on them, but under the right circumstances they can be regurgitated.

God is more efficient. Once asked, he deletes my sin list and then allows himself to forget. What God does instantly for me, I have the responsibility of doing for others the same way-immediately releasing them from the debt they owe for the wrongs they inflicted. Who needs your forgiveness, and what’s keeping you from giving it?

Prayer: Merciful God, when we’re tempted to make a list, give us an eraser instead.
