When the Sounds of Life Cease - Martin Wiles

When the Sounds of Life Cease

Chest gasping, lungs bulging,
hands hiding from what’s ahead.
Nothing but silence awaits
when the sounds of life cease.

Longing for those left behind,
reaching for those yet ahead,
but all in sordid confusion
when the sounds of life cease.

Dear ones weeping near his bedside,
anxious thoughts assailing minds,
crying for what is yet to come
when the sounds of life cease.

But he who lies peacefully on the bier
suddenly knows a different sound.
New echoes are on the horizon
when the sounds of life cease.

On Shifting Sands - Martin Wiles

On Shifting Sands

On shifting sands I stand,
trudging ‘cross this desert land,
heart bulging in my chest,
wondering what will be left.

Sun beating down upon my brow,
supposing God has left for now,
one foot I place before the other—
no other choice given by another.

Mirages here and there between—
promising much but sight unseen,
halting and huffing to be blessed,
I pursue them nonetheless.

Then a calm I’ve never sewn,
swooping in from worlds unknown,
takes rest within my heart,
and offers me a novel start.

Longing for the Mountain - Martin Wiles

To yonder mountain—
snowbound and frozen stiff,
I turned a longing eye,
yearning to be where it seemed I might not go.

No joy, no thrill, no peace—
but, alas, on the rugged lonesome peak
there would be all three and more;
my life would there mold a resounding whole.

No regard had I for my current estate—
no love for the daily affairs at hand.
Only an ache for what was not mine,
for things I could not touch or hold.

Then the mountain turned dark and dim—
All light forever vanished from sight.
Fearfully, around and about and above I glared,
And calmly discovered all I might need or want.

At Peace - Martin Wiles

Our lives are like the rose,
Bursting forth then withering away.
They are like the wind,
Gushing about then lying calm.

But for you, my friend,
The final battle is over.
You have climbed the mountain,
You have walked the valley.

Rest now, my comrade
With all the warriors of battles past.
Lay down your sword and shield,
Put away the snorting horse called life.

Behind you is a great army—
They will fight for you.
In the sweetness of your memory,
They may conquer too.

Good-bye my friend, good-bye;
You have lived with faith.
Stand now before your Creator and God,
Receive your blessed reward.

Against the Wind - Martin Wiles

Against the Wind

Round yon mountain, high and frail—
the wind against my back,
the cold beside my skin,
I traversed the lonesome trail.

Feet trudging o’er rocks and skin—
toes cramped against the walls,
hands numb within the fingers,
I kept my pace against the wind.

Breath pounding within the pen,
I kept my sight between my eyes,
knowing one slip would end
my flight—against the wind.

At last, my dark gave way to shine—
a calm overtook the sky,
and I sat down to contemplate
until next I fought against the wind.
