“I really believe Jesus will come before I die.” I heard it a hundred times if I heard it once.
Dad was a pastor most of my life. He was also a fan of prophecy and had his preferred way of interpreting it. A part of his passion related to Christ’s second coming. While he cautiously avoided setting a date, he adamantly maintained nothing more needed fulfilling before Christ could arrive. But Dad died in 2009, and Jesus didn’t come.
The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent (II Peter 3:9 NLT).
Peter wrote to people much closer in time to Jesus’ ascension back into heaven, and even they were antsy over his return. So Peter explained the delay by reminding them God’s time was different. We live in chronos (calendar) time while Christ works with kairos (God’s) time.
Jesus is returning, but in the meantime I must be patient. He is tolerantly waiting for people to repent. Because of his love for humanity, he doesn’t want anyone to perish. And what appears as a long period for me isn’t for him. One day is like a thousand years is a metaphor but with a literal punch.
But Dad did get at least two things correct where it concerns Christ’s coming. He was ready, and he was busy. He was ready because he knew Jesus as his Savior, and he was busy telling others about Jesus’ sacrifice and helping them grow spiritually. And after all, these are the most important elements when preparing for the King’s arrival.
No one knows when Jesus will come. What’s important is being ready when he arrives.
Prayer: Omnipotent Father, assist us in being godly and busy as we await Your Son’s return.
