Does God Have a Purpose for Everyone? by Martin

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

Purpose. Everyone wants it, but do all people have it?

Having purpose is one of humanity’s basic needs. Knowing why I’m on earth and believing I can make a difference are both essential to good mental health. If I think I have no purpose, I’ll wander from job to job, relationship to relationship, and hobby to hobby with no initiative and with no conviction that I’ll find happiness in any of them. I uncovered my purpose early in life but didn’t pursue it until much later. Consequently, I missed out on many years of what could have been pleasurable and spiritually productive subsistence. Living without purpose is aimless and depressing, but thousands…perhaps millions, do it every day as they wake up with no joy, trudge through the day with no focus, and finally retire never feeling they’ve made a difference.

God’s plan isn’t for anyone to wander aimlessly through life. “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NLT)

Regardless of what others might tell me—or even how I might feel, God’s plan for me is personal and purposeful. Personal because it involves me connecting to him through faith and by accepting what Jesus did on Calvary’s cross. Purposeful because once I enter his family, I can watch as his further purposes for me unfold.

Discovering God’s purpose involves several methods. Through intensely praying, I can hear the still small voice of his Spirit giving me direction. By reading his Word, I can make sure the direction I’m traveling lines up with his moral principles for living. And by interacting with other believers, I can enjoy their wisdom, observe their example, and allow them to give me insight about what God wants to do in my life.

Living out God’s purpose is an adventure of ups and downs, mountains and valleys. His plan for me may even change several times over my lifetime, but he will always have something for me to accomplish. Are you realizing God’s purpose for your life?

Prayer: Thank You Lord Jesus for giving our lives purpose and for giving us the strength to live it out.

Is God Involved in World Affairs? by Martin

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

Reading, seeing, or hearing the news appears to lead to one logical conclusion: God is not involved in the world. But is the conclusion valid?

Many of America’s founding fathers had different ideas about God’s involvement than do present-day Christians. Deism was a popular philosophy, viewing God as the master clock winder who created but who then kicked back and is watching his masterpiece wind down.

“Deism was a philosophical belief that was widely accepted by the colonial intelligentsia at the time of the American Revolution. Its major tenets included belief…in a supreme deity who created the universe…(but) removed himself entirely from the universe after creating it.” (The Christian Nation Myth, 1999)

The Bible, however, presents a radically different picture. The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. (Psalm 37:23 NLT)

To ignore God’s involvement in world and personal affairs means discarding most of the Bible’s message. The Old Testament is the story of God’s participation in the life of Israel. He was responsible for their victories over enemies and for punishing them when they went astray.

The New Testament story is similar. Jesus—the earthly representation of God, was continually involved in other’s affairs…healing, raising the dead, forgiving sins, giving encouragement, predicting coming destructions.

God is involved in world affairs. Daniel wrote, He controls the course of world events; he removes kings and sets up other kings. (Daniel 2:21) Peter said, But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. (Acts 2:23) God sees the entire world parade and directs events according to his purposed or permitted plan.

My responsibility is to pray for those in power that they would seek God’s wisdom. Beyond this, I must be a good citizen by obeying the laws and being involved in my local, national, and world affairs.

God’s involvement in world affairs is often carried out through people. How are you helping God direct local and world affairs?

Prayer: Merciful Lord, so direct world affairs that Your name will be honored and Your kingdom will come.

Throwback Tuesday by Martin

WELCOME TO THROWBACK TUESDAY...BECAUSE WE THINK EVERY DEVOTION DESERVES ANOTHER READING.

Building A Legacy

Due to his father’s untimely death, he never made it beyond sixth grade and had to assume control of the family farm at twelve. He never owned a new vehicle and worked on an ice cream truck until retiring at 72-earning more annually during retirement than while working. My grandfather was known locally as a kind humble man who always carried a smile. If God Can Prevent Tragedies, Why Doesn’t He? by Martin

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

I was standing before my congregation on a Wednesday night. The prayer request that surfaced from a member was innocent enough, but I doubt they had completely thought through what they asked.

We lived fairly close to the South Carolina coast, and a dangerous hurricane was heading in our direction. It wasn’t the first time a hurricane threatened, nor was it the first time I had heard such a request. “Let’s pray that God will turn the hurricane away from us.” Though I acknowledged and commended the request, I couldn’t help but think: “So do you want him to send it someone else’s way?”

Tragedies strike our personal lives periodically and our world daily. If God is good and powerful, why doesn’t he stop them? Jesus’ disciples—and Jews in general, were immensely proud of their city and Temple. But when they pointed out the beautiful buildings to Jesus, he crushed their excitement. Do you see all these buildings? I tell you the truth, they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another! (Matthew 24:2 NLT)

Typically, I define tragedy as something terrible. Car accident, natural disaster, random killing, child abuse. Tragic occurrences. Their ultimate cause is sin which not only affects the natures of individuals—leading them to commit dastardly acts, but also the physical world—causing occasional unfortunate weather patterns as well as deterioration.

God, however, can turn tragedies into triumph. Since he allows sin to temporarily run rampant, tragedies come with the territory. As a parent can see what a child cannot and thus acts in the child’s best interest—even when it doesn’t seem good to the child, so God can do the same as our divine Parent. He can bring something good from a terrible set of circumstances. Churches filled because of 9/11, and an entire city repented when Old Testament Jonah preached to them.

Rather than growing despondent over the why of tragedies, determine how you can be a part of helping God bring good from it.

Prayer: Eternal God in heaven, when tragedy strikes, turn our eyes toward You so we can receive the wisdom needed to respond in healthy and beneficial ways.

If God’s so Good, Why Is There Evil? by Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

While visiting the cemeteries surrounding the old churches in Cades Cove, Tennessee, my brother and I marveled over the numerous headstones showing children’s names—children who had lived only a few days or months. Children who lived in a place where medical care was scarce and fell far short of today’s standards. As they watched their children slowly slip from this life, some of these parents must have wondered why God was allowing this if he was so good. As a minister, I too have had this question posed to me by those who’ve lost children to illnesses or tragedies. And by some who haven’t experienced any personal tragedies but are simply trying to rectify in their minds how a good God and the presence of evil can co-exist.

Jeremiah was given the unpleasant task of telling his people that their world would soon crumble because of their disobedience to God. While he understood the consequences of bad choices, he must have cringed at what God told him these pagan marauders would do to his people and beloved city. LORD, you always give me justice when I bring a case before you. So let me bring you this complaint: Why are the wicked so prosperous? (Jeremiah 12:1 NLT)

Evil is present because God allows freedom of choice. Evidently this freedom originally extended beyond humans, for initially Satan was an angel. He and many others choose to rebel against God (Isaiah 41:13-14). With their rebellion, sin entered, and with Adam and Eve’s rebellion, sin entered my world. Freedom is a part of what makes me human, but it’s also what occasionally leads me into sin. Humanity—and even the world itself, is contaminated.

God is sovereign over evil but temporarily allows it. Why no one knows. Satan may currently spread mayhem, but he is limited by God’s power and permission. Old Testament Job’s dilemma reminds me of this. God’s power is exposed by observing how he takes Satan’s evil intentions and manufactures good from them (Romans 8:28).

Satan may be wreaking havoc, but God is still good and still in control…all the time.

Prayer: Merciful Father, protect us from the antics of the evil one, and remind us that You are always and eternally in control. Thank You guiding our world and lives with Your goodness.

WELCOME TO FLASHBACK FRIDAY...BECAUSE WE THINK EVERY DEVOTION DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE.

Work’s Goodness

Coins jingling in my pocket and bills resting in my wallet. My money. It felt good.

My parents taught me about the goodness of work and tested their opinion with chores. But I loved work. My grandmother was an Avon lady and took me along when ringing doorbells and saying; “Avon calling.”
I spent summers with my grandparents and worked with my grandfather on the ice cream truck. A sumptuous job with fringe benefits. I progressed to bagging groceries at Piggly Wiggly. From plants to mills to offices to churches, I worked. Read more...

Was Jesus God Or Just a Man? by Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

When I glance at my dog and cat, I can easily distinguish the difference. How can I do this so easily? After all, they both have ears, mouths, tongues, eyes, tails, legs and feet, teeth, and fur. I suppose the obvious giveaway is that one meows while the other barks. But suppose I was deaf. Then how would I know. Somewhere in my distance past, my parents, grandparents, nursery workers, and other significant people taught me the difference. They either showed me a picture or the real thing and said “Dog” or “Cat.” Why even my fifteen-month-old grandson knows the difference. If I ask him where the kitty is, he looks at the cat and points. When he sees the dog, he says “Dog.” How does he know? Because I’ve done the same with him as others did with me. I show him the real thing as well as point them out in books we read. I know…he knows, because someone told us so and because I see others naming them the same thing.

A more important question is how I can know the historical Jesus was God. He claimed to be, but is his word enough? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! (John 14:9 NLT)

The debate is ancient. Arius, a popular pastor of the fourth century, said Jesus was half-god—a proclamation that divided the early church. Roman emperor Constantine finally called the bishops together in Nicea. They produced the Nicene Creed which stated emphatically that Jesus was God. But does the work of councils answer the question with certainty?

For almost 2,000 years, the church has testified that Jesus was God. If it has been wrong, surely evidence would have surfaced by now. Many witnessed his resurrection. In addition to Jesus’ twelve apostles, more than 500 others witnessed it as well (I Corinthians 15:6). During his earthly ministry, Jesus manifested his ability to raise the dead, heal those with physical maladies, and perform a host of miracles. All testimonies that he was more than human.

In the final analysis, however, none of the above actually proves Jesus was God if I don’t care to believe. Faith is the only answer. Like so many other spiritual matters, I must simply choose to believe even when there’s an absence of tangible proof. Have you?

Prayer: Father God, we believe that Jesus was Your only begotten Son sent to pay for our sins so that we might have forgiveness and eternal life with You.

Are All Religions Equal? by Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

For the past fifteen years, frosted chocolate pop tarts have been my breakfast of champions. Ironically, I’ve never cared for the most popular brand name manufactured in the United States. I’d rather have a particular store brand. Then I discovered this retailer wasn’t the only one manufacturing this style of pop tart. Several other retailers also had identical store brands. Shape, consistency, taste, ingredients. All the same. Probably one company manufacturing all of them and attaching different labels depending on which retailer they’re destined for. My eyes and taste buds pronounce these dissimilar labeled pop tarts as equal.

When questioned, Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NLT) Does this mean that like pop tarts all religions are equal? Does not each one take me to a Supreme Being?

World religions have many common denominators. Most if not all religions have a moral code of conduct…even the ones that teach killing those who oppose their religion or attempt to teach an alternate one. Things such as murder, lying, stealing, and worshiping false gods are considered wrong. Having a moral code means all religions recognize humans have flaws.

All religions point to a higher being…whether one or more. From the earliest of times, humans have recognized something or someone more powerful than they were. Many make images to represent their god or gods. Furthermore, all religions encourage harmony by promoting the unified worship of their higher beings.

Despite what all religions have in common, Christianity stands alone as unique. All others are misrepresentations or alterations of this one true religion. Christianity promotes worship of One True God, creator of heaven and earth, and his son Jesus who died for the sins of humanity. Only by identifying with him can re-connection with holy God be attained.

While all religions may appear equal—and while we might wish all roads led to God, they aren’t. Jesus said he was the only way. Are you approaching by the only acceptable method?

Prayer: Thank You, merciful God, for making it possible for us to come to You.

Throwback Tuesday by Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO THROWBACK TUESDAY...BECAUSE WE THINK EVERY DEVOTION DESERVES ANOTHER CHANCE.

Confidence Never Loses

“Quitters never win.” “If you fall off, get up and try again.”I heard those statements when learning to ride a bike. I wanted a bike but not just any bike. It had to have high handlebars and a banana seat. But such a bike was useless if I couldn’t ride it. So I started on a smaller version with training wheels. At a certain age though, this makes one a sissy. The day arrived when Dad took the wrench and removed them. As he steadied the bike, I hopped on. Then he gave the dreaded push. I wobbled, twisted, fell and heard, “Get up and try again.” I did and eventually learned to ride and got the bike I wanted. Read More...

Is Jesus Really the Only Way to God? by Martin Wiles

Series: Hey God…I Have a Question

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was more than one way to get to God?

Siri is the newest craze associated with Apple iPhones. Press a button and hear, “What may I help you with?” If it’s driving directions I need, I simply say, “Siri, can you give me driving directions to _____________,” and she immediately accommodates. Unlike other GPS applications which may offer more than one way, Siri merely gives me her way…the quickest way…the way of least resistance. Or course, if I don’t like the route Siri offers…perhaps it is less scenic than I desire, I can use any number of driving applications to discover an alternate course. Most places can be reached by more than one way. Even a deserted island can be accessed by boat, plane, or helicopter.

What if there was more than one way to connect with God? That would mean millions more would be in heaven. But is there? The Bible proclaims, There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12 NLT)

God hasn’t established the only-one-way-to-him route because he’s prejudice or because he enjoys showing favoritism. Nor is God’s one way his method of keeping some out of heaven—though it accomplishes that as well. I don’t have to like or agree with God’s means either, but if I’m to spend eternity with him, I have to come his way.

The Old Testament sacrifices demonstrated God’s idea of what’s necessary to inhabit his presence. Purity. Perfection. Atonement. In spite of the worshipper’s best efforts, none of those sacrifices were. Neither could they remove the worshipper’s sins. They did, however, point to a future perfect sacrifice that would wipe away a person’s sins. Jesus was it. The perfect, sinless Messiah of God. When I identify with him through forgiveness, he cleanses my sins and fits me for God’s presence. He and only he can take me there.

Have you been trying to reach God through some other avenue than Jesus?

Prayer: Thank You, Father God, for making the way possible for us to come to You.

Christ’s Shirt by Martin Wiles

I’m not wearing this shirt anymore when we go out, I huffed.

Smile when I can’t find what I’m looking for when the associate is unaccommodating. Be kind when someone jumps in front of me because they assume their time is more important. And say “Have a nice day” to the person taking my food order when they act as if they could care less if I patronize their restaurant. All because I’m donning a cheap cotton t-shirt with a church logo.

But I suppose my actions and reactions are crucial. After all, my church’s reputation is at risk. Someone could stay away if I report their poor customer service skills to the manager or threaten never to shop there again. Or worse yet, if I act like a jerk, utter an explicative, or lose my cool and stomp away in a rage.

Disgracing my church is really the lesser issue; shaming Christ is at stake. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. (Galatians 3:27)

I’m not only clothed in the church’s shirt; I’m dressed with Christ. And since I’m baptized in him, I represent him everywhere I go. I can’t shed him when I tire of trying to be good. I may imagine aggravating people can’t read my mind so not to worry, but they do through every action, thought and attitude.

We are Christ’s shirts, and only he can give wisdom and power to wear him well. To be kind when we’d rather be unkind, share when we feel stingy, and love when revenge is more enticing. Paul says it best; Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:6).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may our clothing be sprayed with the starch of kindness.

Flashback Friday by Martin Wiles

WELCOME TO FLASHBACK FRIDAY...BECAUSE WE BELIEVE EVERY DEVOTION DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE.

Accepted Not Rejected

Rejection for any reason hurts.

Tech devices hadn’t made the scene, so we played Hide n Seek, cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians, dodge ball, football and baseball (in our yards), and put sheets over chairs for tents. Innocent activities keeping us active.
Even innocent games carry seeds of rejection. I wasn’t the fastest runner, best hitter or most popular student. I was overlooked when choosing captains for dodge ball. And when teams were picked, I was the last selected. But I didn’t grow up with an inferior complex; I just wished for more talents and popularity. Read more...

Preparing for Life’s Trials by Martin Wiles

Joseph was his father’s favored child. I’ve never been the favored son, but I have been the spoiled grandchild. I know what it feels like to bask in the favor of a grandparent and be given special attention. These exclusive favors are nice until it makes you the brunt of your sibling and cousin’s ire. Then things change, as they did for Joseph. His father made him a special long robe with sleeves and colors. His brothers noticed and hated him because he was his father’s favorite. Joseph’s dreams of one day ruling over them didn’t help. So they sold him. During the next 13 years, he would be imprisoned, exalted, accused of rape, imprisoned again, and betrayed by two fellow prisoners who promised to help him. Finally, his chance for deliverance came when he had the opportunity to interpret two of the king’s dreams. Seven years of plenty were on the horizon, but they would be hounded by seven years of famine.

Joseph…cleaned up and shaven, stood before the most powerful man in the land and said, Have them gather all the food produced in the good years that are just ahead and bring it to Pharaoh’s storehouses…That way there will be enough to eat when the seven years of famine come to the land of Egypt. (Genesis 41:35-36 NLT)

When I was young, I viewed trials as things faced by older adults. Little did I realize I was facing them too…my parents were simply shielding me from the trial’s associated pain. But the day soon came when they no longer did…or could. Then I quickly discovered how often trials come and how essential it was to prepare ahead of time.

The best way to brace myself for life’s trials is to accept the fact that they’ll come. Satan often sends them—as he did into Joseph’s life, hoping he’ll destroy my faith in the process, but God can transform into good what he intends for evil. The years of plenty when I’m trial-free provide me with the opportunity to prepare myself spiritually for the years of famine when I’m trial-overrun.

Don’t wonder if trials will come; know they will. Let God prepare you to face them.

Prayer: Thank You Lord God for Your sustaining grace when we’re confronted with life’s trials.

Unending Love by Martin Wiles

I saw my friend’s name appear on my phone. For three years, we had pastored churches in the same town and had become fast friends. We hadn’t talked recently, so I was anxious to catch up. But the news he shared wasn’t what I wanted to hear. He had suffered a seizure. Further testing revealed a brain tumor. Now he lay in a hospital bed awaiting radiation. The tumor was inoperable and the prognosis unfavorable. Often his type of tumor reveals the presence of cancer somewhere else in the body. But his spirits were high. Members of his church have been visiting. Men in the church have preached for him. Instead of turning their back on him because he can’t perform his duties, the church has stepped up and demonstrated their love.

Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. (John 13:1 NLT)

When the news is bad or when tragedy strikes, it’s tempting to question God or think he has forgotten me. I’ve heard many propose it’s wrong to question God, but there’s a difference between questioning God and asking God a question. Questioning God calls into question his love or actions in my life whereas asking him a question merely seeks information about why something has or is happening and how I should respond to it.

God’s love is unending. Regardless of what touches my life, it has been filtered through the Father’s hand and does not signal that he has stopped loving me. He loved me in the past, loves me in the present, and will love me eternally. The expressions of his love may sometimes baffle me, but he loves me nevertheless. I must simply learn to trust his love, mercy, and goodness, as well as the means he uses to expresses it.

When you’re tempted to think God has stopped loving you, think again.

Prayer: Thank You Father for Your eternal love that holds us safely throughout our lifetime.
