Thankful for What - Martin Wiles

thankful for what
We praise God for the wonderful kindness he has poured out on us because we belong to his dearly loved Son. Ephesians 1:6 NLT

Complaints and questions rolled off my tongue like water cascading over a waterfall.

Wasn’t I working a full-time job? Wasn’t I taking every opportunity that presented itself to make extra money? Wasn’t my wife doing all she could to sell items on Facebook? Why, then, was the freezer empty and our cupboard bare? Why was the bank account sitting on empty, just like the gas needle in our car? Why did I have to worry about whether our insurance company would cancel our renter’s insurance?

“I put a little surprise in your car,” a church member and friend whispered. When I looked in the bag after church, I discovered several things we were out of. Since we hadn’t shared this information with her, I figured God must have.

“She also gave us this card,” my wife whispered. I slithered my finger under the flap and removed the card. After reading the outside, I opened it to peruse the inside, but first, I had to remove the fifty-dollar bill. There was the remainder of what we needed to pay our renter’s insurance.

The above episode was topped by another the next day. As my wife checked our bank account balance to ensure we still had the same four dollars we had the last time she checked, she discovered a twenty-dollar deposit had been made. Calling the bank to check on this mysterious deposit, my wife was informed she had made the deposit. But she hadn’t. Now we could gas up the car.

Suddenly, my complaints seemed selfish. I had forgotten I served a big God. Paul reminded first-century believers of the same.

God’s kindness is worth thanking Him for. He has poured out His love through the sacrifice of His Son. We can have all the earthly goods we desire and never have to worry about some of the above things I’ve mentioned, but if our sins remain, our account is still in the negative. God offers freedom from the debt we owe for our sins if we simply ask for forgiveness. Along with forgiveness, He gives wisdom and understanding so we can make sense out of life. And even when it appears senseless, we can thank Him because we know He understands it when we don’t.

Think of things to thank God for rather than complain about.

Father, I thank You for the many gifts You give me, but most of all for allowing Your Son to pay my sin debt.

Flashback Friday - Martin Wiles

What’s Mine Is…

His nickname was “Double T,” but I knew him better by what snuggled in his pocket each Sunday morning…a single dollar bill.

Double T was a kind man, well-known in the community, well-liked in the area, a faithful church attendee, and a regular giver…of one dollar. Had his offering been a “widow’s mite” it would have sufficed-but it wasn’t. He was a good friend, but I often wondered how he imagined the church could pay her bills and serve evangelistically if everyone contributed only one dollar. Read more...

Settling for Less - Martin Wiles

And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure. James 4:3 NLT

We settled for less because we didn’t know we could have had more.

My wife and I sat across the table from a couple I’d soon help renew their wedding vows. Since we hadn’t seen them in quite some time, we enjoyed catching up on each other’s lives. Most of the conversation centered on grandchildren. Then we finalized the details of the renewal ceremony. They had been together 25 years and wanted to celebrate. When the waitress stopped by, we placed our orders. My wife ordered her usual: chicken fingers.

When our meal was over, I heard the husband whisper to the waitress, “Bring me the check.” My wife and I both protested, but to no avail. Then being the comic she is, my wife quipped, “I should have ordered ribs.” Our host replied, “You should have.” We settled for less when we could have had more.

Obviously, we’re not the only ones who do that—and not just with a meal someone buys for us. James indicates my entire life experiences paucity simply because I don’t ask God to make it any better or because the motives with which I ask are tainted.

Lack of faith that God can actually deliver what I want or need will result in living without those things. God wants me to ask to demonstrate my dependence on Him. He’s promised to give me those things I need to survive and do His will, but He wants me to request them nevertheless. When I bring my prayers and supplications to Him, I experience a growth spurt in my faith. He doesn’t need the info; I just need the practice. He will give me the courage to step out in faith to do whatever He instructs me to do.

Living with less also occurs when I ask for things outside God’s will. Learning the difference between wants and needs is essential if I want to receive those things I pray for. I have the ability to know God’s mind. What He wants to give me are life essentials—food, clothing, drink—and the things I’ll need to accomplish His plan for my life. All I have to do is ask.

Don't settle for chicken when you could be enjoying ribs.

Prayer: Father, increase our faith so we won’t settle for less than You want to give us.

Flashback Fridays - Martin Wiles

Thankful Always

Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus (I Thessalonians 5:18 NLT).

“Seriously God? Be thankful in all circumstances?”

“Yes.”

“Even when my children are rebelling and making poor choices?”

“Yes I want you to be thankful.” Read more...
