Flashback Friday - Declaring God's Glory - Martin Wiles

Declaring God’s Glory

“Even a dairymaid can milk cows to the glory of God.” So said and thought Martin Luther, that great German reformer.

As I sat in the theater watching the actors play out their respective roles, I was amazed by the lighting controlled from above. Spotlights accurately shone on whatever actor or group of actors were performing their feature renditions. Others may have been occupying the stage as well, but only shadows fell across them. They could only hope enough light would bounce off the star players so they could maneuver their way around as they awaited their next appearance in the spotlight. Read more...

When Matches Don’t Match - Martin Wiles

But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. Jonah 1:3 NLT

Even when the card he selected didn’t match, he kept trying until he got it right.

My oldest grandson loves one of the Bible apps we installed on his iPad. Each story has a game associated with it, but you must listen to the story before it will let you play the game. His favorite is the story of Noah. The screen fills with overturned cards, each containing an animal that was on the ark. Matching all the animals with their pair is the object of the game.

Levi’s reactions vary according to what kind of mood he’s in on any given day when he plays the game. He may utter an “Oh man,” and keep trying. Or after two failed attempts, he may say, “I don’t want to play this game anymore,” and select another one. He may lay the iPad aside and find something else to do. Occasionally, he gets angry.

Jonah’s reaction wasn’t much different. God told him to go to Nineveh and preach to the people. If they didn’t repent in short order, He planned to reign down judgment. Jonah wasn’t excited about the mission. God’s plan didn’t match his. He knew the Ninevites reputation. He’d love to see them destroyed—not saved. So he ran. God has good plans for His people, but sometimes His plans don’t match mine.

When God’s plans don’t match mine, I have several choices. I can rebel like Jonah. I can run, change jobs, change spouses, change colleges, or change my goals. I can also bargain with God. Jonah probably did—at least in his mind. Okay God, if I go and tell them to repent, will You promise to destroy them if they don’t? But God drives a hard bargain because He’s always right—and I often have difficulty admitting that. Or I can manipulate, take things into my own hands, and do it my way. That never works—even though God may give me enough rope to hang myself.

When God’s plans and mine don’t match, the best thing is submitting to His. His plans are for my good and His glory. Obeying them results in blessings I won’t receive otherwise. God’s plans originate out of love. Obeying them will take me to spiritual heights I’ve never experienced before.

Don’t insist on doing it your way when God’s plans don’t match yours. Do it His way.

Prayer: Father, give us faith to follow Your plan for our lives so we can experience Your best.

What Fish Money Can Do - Martin Wiles

Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”And they left their nets at once and followed him. Matthew 4:19-20 NLT

She played, people clapped, and I told them that’s what fish money did.

Mom’s family attended a small United Methodist church on a country road. The lady who played the piano was older and beginning to miss a few notes. My grandmother wanted Mom to play, even though she was only in elementary school. But she didn’t know how she’d fund the lessons. My grandfather wasn’t about to shell out the money.

But my grandmother had a plan. She loved to fish and sold most of her catches to neighbors who were more than willing to buy them. She could use this money to pay for Mom’s piano lessons. And she did. However, her instructions to the piano teacher were clear: teach her hymns first—and then the other songs. She wanted Mom to play in church as soon as possible.

My grandmother’s plan worked. Mom took lessons, my grandmother paid for them with fish money, and Mom began playing in the Gerizim United Methodist Church when she was elementary age. Almost seventy years later, she’s still playing in church when she has the opportunity. She played for Dad at almost every church he pastored, and now, ironically, she plays for me in the church I pastor.

Fishing attracted Jesus too. The first disciples He called made a living at it. But He told them to leave their nets and their livelihood and follow Him. He would make them fishers of people. After several years of training—and His death—He would set them free to change the world.

God doesn’t require that we have much because He owns it all. My grandmother had very little—and I’m sure she never imagined Mom would use her talent as she had. Mom’s dream involved becoming a concert pianist, but God called her to use her talent in the small churches Dad pastored in South Carolina and Tennessee. The earthly pay stunk, but I imagine the heavenly reward will be worth it.

God is more than willing to send opportunities our way. All that He requires is that we ask for them. And to ask for the faith eyes to see them when He sends them. Busyness and misplaced priorities can blind us, but our willingness opens unimaginable doors.

Don’t underestimate what God can do with a small amount of resources—and your faith.

Prayer: Father, show us what You can do in our lives when we trust You by faith.

Throwback Tuesday - Living with Purpose - Martin Wiles

Living with Purpose

I’ve never been one, but I hear it’s an exhilarating experience. And as of February 21, 2013, I entered the “Grandpa (or more appropriately ‘Pee Paw’) world.”

Levi Andrew Wiles entered our universe in Anderson, South Carolina, at 1:24 a. m. Fortunately, my daughter didn’t force me to wait 20 hours for his arrival. Within the space of a few hours, he guzzled his first breath of air, wallowed in his first bath, underwent a thorough inspection by medical staff, gulped his first sip of mother’s milk, and made himself ready for the holding and gawking that normally attends the birth of a first child or grandchild.
