Matthew 5:37 Just say a simple, ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t.’ Anything beyond this is from the evil one. (NLT)
“He’s as good as his word” was once an important characterization because one’s word was about all a person had. “I promise to repay or be faithful” was all that was needed. No contracts or prenuptial agreements. Now we sign a mound of forms and initial them as proof we signed them when buying homes, cars, furniture, appliances and anything else we don’t have sufficient cash for. While this is the world we live in, our word remains vital. It reflects our character which is molded through integrity. Doing and saying the right thing is critical. Even more essential is faithfulness to what we say.
