Love’s Perseverance

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (NIV)

My daughter was an avid runner until exercise induced asthma slowed her down. Track, cross country, 5 K runs, she loved them all. I tried it myself for about a year, but I had two things against me: weight and bad knees. There is a “high” that comes with running. It’s almost like an addiction. You never get enough, and you always want to repeat the action. The Christian life is compared to a race, and there are similar characteristics. We have highs and lows. Times when we surge forward and times when we want to quit. But our love for God should drive us on. Success comes when we lay aside anything hindering our progress-unhealthy thoughts, actions, attitudes or words. And the good news is we don’t run alone. God is empowering us, and there is a great cloud of witnesses-fellow runners, encouraging us along the way.
